Up to and including <span class=\"s1\"><b>Office 2016<\/b><\/span> one typically obtained <span class=\"s1\"><b>a total of approximately 10 years of support<\/b><\/span>:<\/p><ul><li><p class=\"p1\">approx. 5 years <span class=\"s1\"><b>Mainstream support<\/b><\/span> (all updates),<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">up to 5 years thereafter <span class=\"s1\"><b>Extended Support<\/b><\/span> (mainly security patches).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><h4><b>Newer retail versions: significantly shorter<\/b><\/h4><p class=\"p1\">That has changed:<\/p><ul><li><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Office 2019<\/b><\/span> was one of the last classic retail versions.<\/p><ul><li><p class=\"p1\">Mainstream support ended in 2023,<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">Extended Support ended on <span class=\"s1\"><b>14 October 2025<\/b><\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\">This effectively results in <span class=\"s1\"><b>Approximately 7 years of support<\/b><\/span>, not 10.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Office 2021<\/b><\/span>, also a purchase licence version, will receive even shorter support:<\/p><ul><li><p class=\"p1\">Official support ends on <span class=\"s1\"><b>13 October 2026<\/b><\/span>,<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">after that there is <span class=\"s1\"><b>No extended security updates<\/b><\/span> or technical support anymore.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\">This means that the support periods are <span class=\"s1\"><b>between approximately 5 and 7 years<\/b><\/span> \u2014 depending on the version \u2014 significantly lower than what many customers were accustomed to with earlier versions.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h4><b>What this means in practical terms<\/b><\/h4><p class=\"p1\">For users of traditional one-off purchases, this means:<\/p><ul><li><p class=\"p1\">After the end of support <span class=\"s1\"><b>you will no longer receive security updates<\/b><\/span>. This increases the risk of data loss or attacks by malware.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Technical support is no longer required<\/b><\/span> \u2013 No more telephone or chat support from Microsoft.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">Compatibility with newer operating systems or services may suffer over time.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\">And important parts of the support even ended in some cases. <span class=\"s1\"><b>before the official end of support<\/b><\/span>The ability of older Office versions to connect to current Microsoft services such as Microsoft 365 has already been restricted in the past (e.g. from October 2023).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><h4><b>Strategic focus on subscription models<\/b><\/h4><p class=\"p1\">Microsoft is clearly shifting its resources away from traditional purchase versions and towards <span class=\"s1\"><b>Microsoft 365 subscriptions<\/b><\/span>:<\/p><p class=\"p1\">These receive continuous updates, security enhancements and new features for as long as the subscription is active \u2014 a model that is ideal for customers with permanent, unlimited-time purchase licences. <span class=\"s1\"><b>is no longer valid<\/b><\/span>.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">For many users, this means:<\/p><ul><li><p class=\"p1\">Either they switch to a subscription model,<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">or they have to buy new permanent Office versions more frequently when the old one is no longer supported.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\"><strong><br \/>The support period for traditional Office purchase licences is shrinking:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><p class=\"p1\">Office 2019 ends in October 2025,<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">Office 2021 ends in October 2026,<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">Earlier versions such as Office 2013 or 2016 are already completely out of support.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\">This forces buyers to either purchase new versions more often or switch to a <span class=\"s1\"><b>subscription model<\/b><\/span> to consider \u2014 a noticeable change in strategy by Microsoft that will affect user comfort in the long
