Teams Outlook add-in causes classic Outlook to crash - cause and solution

The interaction between Microsoft Teams and Outlook is part of everyday life for many companies. This makes it all the more problematic when this integration becomes a disruptive factor: In some environments, the Teams Outlook add-in causes the classic Outlook (desktop version) to crash or not start at all.

Problem: Outlook crashes on startup or when using the add-in

Typical symptoms:

  • Outlook starts briefly and closes again immediately

  • Crash when opening or creating appointments

  • Error messages in connection with add-ins

  • Outlook no longer responds („No response“)

It is noticeable that the problem often only occurs in the classic Outlook (Win32 version) - not in the new Outlook or the web version.

Cause: Conflict with the Teams add-in

The Teams Outlook add-in (for scheduling Teams meetings) is automatically installed with Microsoft Teams and integrated into Outlook. This can lead to conflicts in certain constellations, for example:

  • Version conflicts between Teams and Office

  • Defective add-in registration

  • Problems after updates (Teams or Office)

  • Switch between „new teams“ and „classic teams“

Switching to the new Teams while Outlook is still using the old add-in structure is particularly critical.

Solution: Deactivate add-in or register again

Option 1: Deactivate add-in in Outlook (quickest solution)

  1. Start Outlook in safe mode

    → Outlook.exe /safe

  2. Menu: File → Options → Add-ins

  3. At the bottom under „COM add-ins“ → Go to

  4. Remove the tick from „Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office“

  5. Restart Outlook

Result: Outlook is stable again, but Teams meeting function is missing

Variant 2: Clean re-registration of the Teams add-in

If the add-in is still required:

  1. Close Outlook completely

  2. Teams also finish

  3. Check the following path (example):

C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\TeamsMeetingAddin

  1. Ensure that the file Microsoft.Teams.AddinLoader.dll is present

  2. Restart teams (the add-in registers automatically)

  3. Start and check Outlook

Option 3: Update Teams and Office

  • Update Microsoft Teams completely

  • Bring Office up to date

  • If required: Reinstall teams (recommended for „new teams“)

The Teams Outlook add-in is practical - but not always stable. Crashes can occur in classic Outlook, especially in mixed or updated environments. In most cases, deactivating or reinitialising the add-in helps.

If Outlook crashes regularly, it is worth taking a targeted look at this add-in - it is more often the cause than you might think.
