With Windows 11 24H2 and the subsequent 25H2 update, Microsoft is significantly enhancing its operating system. The focus is on better performance, modern security functions, more AI integration and an overall more stable user interface. Users of the latest hardware in particular will benefit from noticeable improvements in everyday use.
Windows 11 24H2 was officially distributed in stages from October 2024 via Windows Update. Compatible devices initially received the update as an option, but it was later released automatically for more and more systems. Users can install the update directly under „Settings > Windows Update“. The new version will appear there as soon as the device is compatible. (Source: Wikipedia)
Technically, 24H2 is one of the biggest Windows 11 updates since the operating system was launched. Microsoft has primarily improved the system speed. File Explorer responds faster, updates are installed more efficiently and the entire system runs more smoothly on modern hardware. Power management has also been optimised, which has a positive effect on battery life, especially for notebooks.
A major focus is on artificial intelligence. Microsoft is increasingly integrating Copilot into Windows. New AI functions help with searches, image editing, translations and general operation of the system. However, some functions are exclusively available for so-called Copilot+ PCs. These include live subtitles, studio effects and AI-supported image functions. (Source: Microsoft Support)
Microsoft is also making further improvements in the area of security. Windows 11 24H2 improves protection against malware, modernises internal security mechanisms and optimises driver management. Companies also benefit from longer support periods and simplified administration. At the same time, Microsoft is increasingly removing older components and replacing them with more modern technologies.
Windows 11 25H2 builds directly on 24H2 and was also officially released from September 2025 via Windows Update. Unlike 24H2, this is not a complete substructure change, but rather a so-called activation update. This makes the installation much smaller and faster. Many functions were already technically available in 24H2 and will simply be activated or expanded with 25H2. (Source: Windows Central)
With 25H2, Microsoft is concentrating primarily on stability, optimisation and fine-tuning. The start menu has been further modernised, the Windows search works faster and the general operation appears more consistent. Microsoft has also improved the gaming optimisations and reduced background processes so that games receive more resources.
Another advantage of Windows 11 25H2 is the extended support. This means that users will again receive several years of security updates without having to completely reinstall. Precisely because 24H2 and 25H2 are based on the same platform, the upgrade usually runs smoothly and much faster than previous major Windows upgrades. (Source: Windows Central)
Despite many improvements, there are still points of criticism. The hardware requirements remain high and older PCs are sometimes excluded. In addition, not everyone likes the ever greater integration of AI functions. Some users also criticise the increasing size of the updates and the strong links with Microsoft services.
Overall, however, Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 clearly show where Windows is heading: more automation, better security, faster updates and a more modern user interface. If you are already using Windows 11 and have compatible hardware, Windows Update will provide you with a much more sophisticated system overall than in the first Windows 11 versions.
