On 12 January 2027, Windows Server 2016 will reach the end of its extended support. From that date onwards, Microsoft will no longer provide free security updates, bug fixes or technical support services.
What are the consequences of the end of support?
An operating system without security updates poses a significant risk. Newly discovered vulnerabilities are no longer patched, making cyberattacks, data loss or system failures more likely. Furthermore, compliance requirements or stipulations from insurers and business partners may be affected.
Many software manufacturers also provide only limited support, or none at all, for older operating systems once Microsoft’s support has ended. This can lead to problems with updates or the integration of new applications.
Act now rather than react later
Even if your Windows Server 2016 is still running reliably today, you should plan your migration well in advance. Depending on your existing infrastructure, there are various solutions to consider:
- Upgrade to Windows Server 2025
- Migration to new hardware
- Virtualisation of existing systems
- Migration of individual services to the cloud
- Review and modernisation of the entire server infrastructure
Planning ahead helps to avoid downtime and ensure that investments are made wisely.
