Windows Server 2025 brings important innovations that are specifically designed for higher performance, improved security and the requirements of modern, virtualised workloads. The system was officially released in November 2024 and is available via the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC). It includes updates for Hyper-V, Active Directory and GPU acceleration. Of particular note is the support of NVMe for significantly faster storage access - up to 60 % higher IOPS performance compared to previous versions.
In the area of security, new features such as Credential Guardwhich protects credentials with advanced credential theft protection mechanisms. SMB via QUIC enables secure file transfers via networks. In addition, the Delegated Managed Service Accounts (dMSA) A function for automated access data management has been introduced, which reduces the administrative burden. Another key feature is the Hotpatchingwhich makes it possible to install updates without restarting the server - ideal for Azure environments.
Developers benefit from the new Dev Drivewhich is based on the ReFS file system and is optimised for frequent read and write operations of large files. With DTrace also provides a powerful diagnostic tool that enables real-time monitoring of system performance.
Windows Server 2025 is expected to remain in regular support until October 2029 and will receive extended support until October 2034. This version is particularly aimed at companies that want to rely on the latest server technologies from Microsoft.
We are currently in an intensive test phase with Windows Server 2025especially for our terminal server customers. Our focus is primarily on two key innovations: Graphics card power distribution and Hotpatching.
The improved GPU distribution is particularly interesting for us, as we can use it to specifically distribute the graphics performance between different virtual machines. For terminal server environments where many users work simultaneously, it is crucial that GPU resources are optimally utilised. This new feature allows us to specifically allocate graphics resources to individual VMs, which significantly improves performance and user experience. This allows us to ensure that more graphically demanding applications run more smoothly and that the system load is distributed efficiently.
Another highlight is the Hotpatching. This function allows updates to be applied directly to running systems without the need for a restart. This is particularly valuable for us and our customers, as it allows us to maximise availability and productivity - maintenance work can be carried out without interrupting ongoing operations.
With these new functions, Windows Server 2025 offers promising possibilities for a high-performance, uninterrupted and resource-saving IT infrastructure. The tests have been very positive so far and we are excited to see how these functions will enrich the productive use of our terminal server solutions.
