Many users of Microsoft Office packages as classic purchase licence (i.e. without a subscription) are currently undergoing a gradual change: the period during which Microsoft provides these versions with security patches, bug fixes and technical support is noticeably become shorter than before.
Traditional: Long support cycles
Previously, Office versions had long, fixed support cycles. Up to and including Office 2016 one typically obtained a total of approximately 10 years of support:
approx. 5 years Mainstream support (all updates),
up to 5 years thereafter Extended Support (mainly security patches).
Newer retail versions: significantly shorter
That has changed:
Office 2019 was one of the last classic retail versions.
Mainstream support ended in 2023,
Extended Support ended on 14 October 2025.
This effectively results in Approximately 7 years of support, not 10.
Office 2021, also a purchase licence version, will receive even shorter support:
Official support ends on 13 October 2026,
after that there is No extended security updates or technical support anymore.
This means that the support periods are between approximately 5 and 7 years — depending on the version — significantly lower than what many customers were accustomed to with earlier versions.
What this means in practical terms
For users of traditional one-off purchases, this means:
After the end of support you will no longer receive security updates. This increases the risk of data loss or attacks by malware.
Technical support is no longer required – No more telephone or chat support from Microsoft.
Compatibility with newer operating systems or services may suffer over time.
And important parts of the support even ended in some cases. before the official end of supportThe ability of older Office versions to connect to current Microsoft services such as Microsoft 365 has already been restricted in the past (e.g. from October 2023).
Strategic focus on subscription models
Microsoft is clearly shifting its resources away from traditional purchase versions and towards Microsoft 365 subscriptions:
These receive continuous updates, security enhancements and new features for as long as the subscription is active — a model that is ideal for customers with permanent, unlimited-time purchase licences. is no longer valid.
For many users, this means:
Either they switch to a subscription model,
or they have to buy new permanent Office versions more frequently when the old one is no longer supported.
The support period for traditional Office purchase licences is shrinking:
Office 2019 ends in October 2025,
Office 2021 ends in October 2026,
Earlier versions such as Office 2013 or 2016 are already completely out of support.
This forces buyers to either purchase new versions more often or switch to a subscription model to consider — a noticeable change in strategy by Microsoft that will affect user comfort in the long term.
