Sunrise switches off the 3G network

From 10 June 2025, Sunrise will officially begin the gradual shutdown of its 3G mobile network. The technology, which was introduced around 20 years ago, has become increasingly less important in recent years. With the increasing spread of 4G and 5G, the 3G network is hardly used anymore and at the same time ties up valuable frequency resources. Sunrise is thus following the example of many international network operators who are switching off older mobile communications standards in favour of more efficient technologies.

This measure will change little for most customers. Anyone using a current smartphone that supports 4G or already supports 5G will not be affected by the changeover. Modern devices with VoLTE technology - i.e. telephony via the 4G network - can also continue to be used as usual. The situation is different for older mobile phones that only support 3G or on which VoLTE is not activated. They may no longer be able to make or receive calls after the network is switched off, even if a mobile data connection via 2G is still technically possible. However, the voice quality and reliability of such connections would be significantly reduced.

In addition to private individuals, companies and institutions that still use 3G-based M2M or IoT devices (e.g. alarm systems, vehicle sensors or older transmission devices) are particularly affected. Sunrise recommends that these customers make a technical switch to 4G-capable solutions as early as possible in order to avoid interruptions or system failures. Older SIM cards may also be affected by the changeover if they do not support the newer network standards.

The shutdown of the 3G network will enable Sunrise to utilise the freed-up frequencies more efficiently and invest in the further development of modern mobile communications technologies. Customers will benefit in the long term from more stable network coverage, higher speeds and better energy efficiency. If you are unsure whether your own device is affected, you can contact Sunrise customer service directly or take advantage of specialist advice in the Sunrise shop.
